A Love Jones for Back to School
By Shay Wyrick Cathey (c)
'Twas the night before school
And summer was done;
No more late nights, late mornings
And all types of fun
The clothes were pressed
And ready for wear
New shirts, pants and socks
Laid out on the chair
Lunches all made
Sandwich, chips and a drink
Even breakfast prepared
So their minds start to think
School supplies labeled
Each with its own name
Pens, pencils and folders
Some different; some the same.
Even gifts for the teachers
With a note from each lad
To start on the good foot
In case all goes bad
Shower rotations
So each one is clean
Getting ready for bed
And back to school dreams
A group prayer was next
And a wish for the year
With each passing grade
There's more smiles and less tears
Hi fives and kisses
As they slowly move out of sight
We yell these words gleefully,
"Go to bed! It's a school night!"
